I'm part of a parenting group and getting people to get involved and take some ownership is like pulling teeth. I don't understand it. I feel like I'm involved and I'm working and this benefits all of us so why not step up in even a small way!?

But on the flip side we received in invite to a neighborhood party in July. At first I thought we would go, but as the date approached I decided that I was only going because I felt I should and not because I wanted to. Then when the date came we had a sick kid and I forgot to even tell my neighbors that we weren't coming.

Somehow I find the whole neighborly gathering awkward. I am not that social and I like my space. Our neighborhood created an e-mail group to help coordinate our effort to block some development abutting our neighborhood. The email group is great - but even then I get uncomfortable when my neighbors start spouting their religious beliefs or worshiping the trees or whatever (this county attracts some odd ones...). I am simultaneously driven to block the development and intensely uncomfortable being intimate with my neighbors' personal lives. Which is odd since we can hear each other's conversations and see into each other's houses sometimes so it's not like we live entirely privately....All the same, not wanting to become too intimate is what keeps me from being more involved in neighborhood stuff.

Maybe a neighborhood email loop or blog would make it so that people can be part of the solution w/ out having to actually be involved?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
